    “Life, Liberty, and All the Rest of It”: Reading…



    Where Kaye, her proper” WASP-wife analogue, is a blonde, college-educated school teacher who (at least at the outset) loves Michael unconditionally, embodying both familial innocence and a New World” kind of feminine consumeristic contentment (she’s shown buying Christmas presents, organizing trips, going to the theater, getting ready to settle down with Michael), To Die For goes out of its way to stress that Suzanne is only partially educated (“junior college” her father reluctantly admits), and anti-maternal, a seducer of school children, a would-be working woman destined to failure by her own vanity and shallowness. As the previous quote suggests, many reviews continually emphasized Suzanne’s lack of intelligence – or, per National Review, just the right amount of dumbness” – and it’s this dimwittedness, paired with an overdeveloped sense of elitist entitlement, that leads to Suzanne’s ultimate demise. Vaguely feminist emotions stir in my breast,” David Denby wrote of this aspect of Suzanne’s character (somewhat ironically given his own misogynistic description of the character), Henry and Van Sant have hallowed [her] out, as if an ambitious driven woman needed to be exposed as a jerk. What would happen if Matt Dillon were the ambitious one?” he asks. Well, he might have been Michael Corleone. 

    At the same time, Suzanne is no Kaye either. While Kaye’s WASPy purity and innocence frame her as a potential oasis of all-Americanness for Michael, Suzanne’s surface-level similarities to Kaye are framed as a sterile trap for Larry. She’s so pure and delicate” Larry initially marvels, comparing her looks to a fragile china doll, You just have to look at her and you wanna take care of her the rest of your life.” But Suzanne doesn’t want Larry’s care, she wants independence and success, and she will kill to get it, despicable in part because the movie posits she was never smart enough to make it. When Larry asks whether she wants kids, Suzanne spits, If you wanted a babysitter you should’ve married Mary Poppins.” She’s bewitching, but deadly, a feminine monster who’s repeatedly associated with witches through cuts to Bell, Book and Candle on TV in the background and the use of Donovan’s Season of the Witch’ at the film’s conclusion. Like a witch who enchants men for her own purposes, Suzanne is hyper-performative and über-pragmatic, using the racist, classist, elitist logics of television as her yardstick for life. 

    Suzanne views her doll-like ice queen” beauty as a means to an end, weaponizing her status as an avatar for the televisual beneficence Kaye types typically represent. She religiously preserves her pallor (or her pure” whiteness in contrast to what she calls the ethnic” disadvantages of anchors like Connie Chung), constantly tries to lose the five pounds the camera adds, and wears her pastel miniskirts and kitten heels like an army uniform, no matter how schlubbily her coworkers may dress for the office. She tells everyone around her to optimize” themselves to succeed,” and finally uses trailer trash” teens to kill Larry. Lacking the excuses Michael has for his actions, she weaponizes the familiar narrative true crime tropes her Kaye-like exterior offers – innocence and victimization – turning them on her husband and drawing the cameras she so desperately craves in the process. Who are they gonna believe?” she asks primly, I come from a good family.” One review put it this way: What jury would convict such an attractive and popular TV weather girl? (ask O.J., he’ll tell you).” 

    Only Larry’s sister, Janice (Illeana Douglas), sees through this delicate façade, calling Suzanne an ice queen” and a four letter word: C‑O-L‑D, cold.” Where Michael Corleone’s signature coldness is presented as an extension of the American capitalist imperative, Suzanne’s status as an ice queen” is presented as a monstrous extension of that all-American medium of New World” modernity, television. In this sense, Suzanne’s relative coldness” is her defining characteristic and the principle that unifies the film’s themes – as Marshall McLuhan suggests, television is a cool medium, mesmeric and passifying, and, icy though she may be, it’s her avidity,” her passionate desire to make it (her failure to truly embody Michael’s businesslike New World” mentality) that fails her. She looks very fragile and delicate right?” Larry tells Janice when they start dating, But when we’re– when I’m… the details are too graphic, but she’s like a volcano.”

    Introduction

    Current films have struggled to address the modern-day realities of relationship dynamics. Sophie Brooks’ Oh, Hi! might exaggerate the details for the sake of entertainment, but the story’s basis is a skewering of dating, romance, sex, and expectations.

    Synopsis

    Molly Gordon stars as Iris, a young woman going on her first weekend getaway with her boyfriend Isaac (Logan Lerman). While everything begins idyllic, including some light bondage during a sexual encounter, Iris mentions their status as a couple, which Isaac rejects. Apoplectic, Iris leaves Isaac chained to the bed and goes to another part of the house to ruminate.

    Following a phone call with her mother (Polly Draper), Iris attempts to convince Isaac to stay with her for the next 12 hours while he is chained. As Iris tries everything in her power to keep Isaac in a relationship he didn’t know he was in, she enlists the help of her best friend, Max (Geraldine Viswanathan), who brings along her boyfriend, Kenny (John Reynolds). As they face the true implications of their actions, Iris attempts to reconcile and recontextualize the reality of her and Isaac’s relationship.

    Themes

    Brooks and Gordon (who receive a story credit) are not in the business of having the right answers for any party. Outside of the actual kidnapping aspect, who is actually to blame for their status as a couple is always in question. Iris correctly points out arbitrary “boyfriend” things Isaac has done for her, while Isaac correctly states their relationship has never been formalized.

    On the flip side, Iris is jumping to very large conclusions while Isaac cannot be that oblivious to the reality of their situation. Neither character gets an easy out. It’s all presented with this tightrope walk of lunacy and pragmatism.

    Out of context, Iris performing an interpretive dance she did as a child for a chained Isaac seems like crazy behavior. Nonetheless, Iris just wants the ease and romance they experienced in their first few hours to continue, no matter the cost. It’s only with the arrival of Max and Kenny that Iris recognizes the severity and insanity of her actions. It somehow also never strays from comedy.

    Jokes about going to jail, or even the possibility of murdering Isaac, are mentioned, but there is no actual threat of real harm. The lack of severity in the threats doesn’t make the film predictable. It’s the exact opposite. Your mind concocts several scenarios, and Brooks leads it to a satisfying conclusion.

    Cast

    Gordon, who has shot to stardom as a writer, director, and performer, delivers her best performance. She completely inhabits Iris’ ideals of romance and desire, while switching to levels of instability and unpredictability without betraying her characterization. It’s her most complex work, and she shares a balanced chemistry with each of her scene partners.

    Lerman, who seemed doomed to typecasting as the young, sensitive man, plays wonderfully against type. While he is by no means a creep or a deviant, he smartly subverts the expectations of his previous film roles to deliver a solid comedic performance.

    It takes a while for Viswanathan to show up, but she is an always-welcome sight. Similarly, her chemistry with Reynolds is one of longstanding trust, which is difficult to convey in the short time span the film allows. Reynolds also has some hilarious line readings with a dry delivery. David Cross also shows up briefly as a particularly odd, but continually funny neighbor to the house.

    Conclusion

    Oh, Hi! is a breezy watch for the new generation of 20 and 30-year-olds attempting to navigate modern relationships. It might not be the deepest of films, but the tone will be a big hit for those who are currently in that world.

    Introduction

    In 1939, Hollywood was basking in an almost mythic glow. It was the year of Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and Stagecoach—a cinematic apex unmatched in American history. The studio system was operating at full throttle, its stars luminous, its moguls wealthy, its audiences faithful. Then the world changed.

    Cinema Scholars looks back on how the outbreak of World War II in Europe and America’s entry into the war after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 shifted the role of the film industry from escapism to engagement. The golden machinery of Hollywood became an arm of the American war effort, voluntarily, zealously, and sometimes self-servingly. From 1939 to 1945, the studio system reached both its peak in patriotism and its structural limits.

    The Studio System: Still King, But Under Strain

    At the heart of the system were still the Big Five—MGM, Warner Bros., Paramount, 20th Century-Fox, and RKO—and the Little Three—Columbia, Universal, and United Artists. These vertically integrated studios controlled the flow of content from the soundstage to the theater marquee. The stars were bound by contract, and the films rolled out on a strict schedule.

    In the early 1940s, despite material shortages and labor tensions, the studios remained profitable. War was good for business. Audiences flooded theaters for both newsreels and narrative films. By 1943, weekly movie attendance in the U.S. reached a staggering 90 million—more than half the country’s population. Yet the pressure to support the war effort, maintain public morale, and adhere to federal messaging introduced unprecedented constraints—and opportunities.

    Washington and Hollywood: A New Alliance

    The U.S. government quickly recognized film’s potential as a propaganda tool. In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Office of War Information (OWI), which coordinated with Hollywood to ensure that films aligned with national interests. The OWI issued guidelines: portray Allied unity, avoid excessive gore or defeatism, include women in the workforce narrative, and never glorify the enemy.

    Studios collaborated—sometimes reluctantly, often eagerly. Frank Capra, fresh off his Oscar wins, joined the Army and produced the Why We Fight documentary series. John Ford and John Huston also enlisted, making powerful wartime documentaries like The Battle of Midway (1942) and Report from the Aleutians (1943).

    Even fictional narratives carried messages. Warner Bros., known for its hard-hitting social dramas, led the charge. Casablanca (1942), though not conceived as propaganda, became a powerful allegory for resistance and sacrifice. Mrs. Miniver (1942), a British-American co-production from MGM, was lauded by Churchill as “worth six divisions.”

    Stars in Uniform—and Bond Drives

    Many of Hollywood’s leading men exchanged tuxedos for uniforms. Jimmy Stewart flew combat missions in Europe. Clark Gable, devastated by his wife Carole Lombard’s death in a war bond flight crash, enlisted in the Army Air Forces. Tyrone Power joined the Marines. Meanwhile, female stars like Bette Davis, Marlene Dietrich, and Hedy Lamarr toured the country raising millions in war bonds.

    The Hollywood Canteen, co-founded in 1942 by Davis and actor John Garfield, served as a star-studded morale booster where servicemen could dance with movie stars and eat for free. Studios encouraged their stars to appear humble, patriotic, and accessible—a vital part of the war machine’s emotional arsenal.

    Films as War Weapons—and Cultural Mirrors

    From 1939 to 1945, genres evolved. War films surged in popularity, but so did musicals, screwball comedies, and noir. Films like Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) wrapped patriotism in razzle-dazzle. The More the Merrier (1943) explored the housing shortages caused by wartime mobilization, blending social commentary with romantic comedy.

    Meanwhile, the shadow of darkness grew. The trauma of war and global instability helped birth film noir—cynical, morally ambiguous stories often featuring returning soldiers and broken dreams. Films like Double Indemnity (1944) and Laura (1944) spoke to a restless, more jaded America.

    Cracks in the System

    The war years were profitable, but the old studio machinery was beginning to creak. Labor strikes erupted at Disney and Warner Bros., challenging the studios’ treatment of workers. Independent producers like David O. Selznick and Samuel Goldwyn pushed for greater creative control outside the traditional studio hierarchy. The OWI’s influence, while significant during the war, also opened the door for federal scrutiny. As the Cold War dawned, the alliance between Washington and Hollywood would take a darker turn.

    And looming in the distance was a legal storm: the 1948 Paramount Decree, a Supreme Court ruling that would end the studios’ monopolistic grip over theaters. But the roots of that decision stretched back into the war years, as independent theaters began to question the fairness of the studio stranglehold.

    Curtain Call for an Era

    By 1945, the war had ended, but the world—and Hollywood—had changed irrevocably. The studios were still powerful, but they were no longer unquestioned emperors. Stars wanted autonomy. Directors demanded creative freedom. And audiences, exposed to the harsh realities of war, were growing more sophisticated.

    The studio system would stagger into the 1950s, still producing hits, but its golden age was over. Between 1939 and 1945, Hollywood had become more than entertainment. It had become a national institution—and a battlefield of ideas.

But watching his new era of </span><i>Superman</i><span> come to the screen, it’s clear the man does know how to have fun. </span></p> <p dir="ltr"><span>Rather than a dour, trauma-based origin story, his </span><i>Superman</i><span> kicks off with the Man of Steel (played by David Corenswet) already an established figure, known and loved across the globe as one of many <span class="push-double"/>​<span class="pull-double">“</span>meta-humans” who populate this reality. His alter ego, Clark Kent, is scoring front pages at </span><i>The Daily Planet</i><span>, and he’s three months into a steamy romance with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan).</span></p> <div class="my-10 bg-[var(--color-background-accent)] font-primary text-[16px] font-bold rounded-[16px] p-8"> <h3 class="!mb-4 text-[24px]">Get more Little White Lies</h3> </p></div> <p dir="ltr"><span>But all is not well in the Kryptonian household, as Superman has just suffered his first defeat, thanks to the Lex Luthor (an almost-impressively awful Nicholas Hoult) led clan. He’s also in geopolitical hot water, having prevented Boravia from invading its neighbouring country, Jarhanpur, despite Boravia technically being a <span class="caps">US</span> ally. Corenswet is a more charismatic on-screen presence than predecessors Henry Cavill and Brandon Routh, and as such does better with the quippier dialogue than when being asked to deliver bilge about what it means to be human.</span></p> <p dir="ltr"><span>Because just as this poptastic, colour-saturated, zinger- and needle drop-filled movie seeks to distinguish itself from the sepia-toned sociopathy of Zack Snyder’s reign, this Superman also distinguishes itself by fucking hating America.</span></p> <p dir="ltr"><span>While Lois remarks that Superman sees the best in every person he meets, the film itself is spilling over with misanthropy. Gunn, evidently not having fully worked through his brief social media cancellation and subsequent firing and rehiring by Disney, fills the screen with corrupt politicians and journalists, internet trolls, his fellow superheroes are corporate sell outs and even the comic’s sweet Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) is kind of a douche. </span></p> <p dir="ltr"><span>Aside from Lois and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), women are selfie-obsessed bimbos, idly gossiping or cast into hellish incarceration for the sin of being mean about men online. But most uncomfortable of all is the conflict between Boravia and Jarhanpur, where sweet brown children beg Superman to save them as soldiers prepare to gun them down. The official line is that this was all conceived of long ago, but needless to say, given the ongoing genocide in Palestine, it feels in woefully poor taste.</span></p> <p dir="ltr"><span>While looking for nuance in Gunn’s insights into the state of the world at large is like asking a horse for directions, and unsurprisingly the silliest aspects of the film are its best. Robots having existential crises; a mischievous super-powered puppy; Nathan Fillion with a blonde bowl cut; and the film’s <span class="caps">MVP</span>, Edi Gathegi, as the perma non-plussed Mr Terrific. </span></p> <p dir="ltr"><span>A spiralling massacre taking place while Noah and the Whale’s </span><i>Five Years Time</i><span> drops feels like a retread to the Rocket Raccoon and Groot fight in </span><i>Guardians</i><span>, but to Gunn’s credit, sticking to what he’s good at is far more amusing than the inevitable <span class="caps">CGI</span> smash-fest these films are contractually obliged to descend into.</span></p> <p dir="ltr"><span>There’s promise here. A broader cinematic universe that feels cohesive, filled with amusing cameos and, for the first time in years, a <span class="caps">DCU</span> that feels like it has a faint pulse are all very welcome. But whenever the film strains to address Big Ideas, it’s painful. Magenta Light Pictures is releasing <em><strong>Bride Hard</strong></em> in theaters nationwide on June 20, 2025.</span></p> <h2 class="p3"><strong><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif">Introduction</span></strong></h2> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">It’s wedding season, so cue the annual onslaught of nuptial-centric movies. <em><strong>From Father of the Bride</strong></em> and <em><strong>Wedding Crashers</strong></em> to<em><strong> Bridesmaids</strong> </em>and the more recent <em><strong>You’re Cordially Invited</strong></em>, the enduring popularity of the subgenre means these films will continue to be churned out indefinitely. In other cases where the context and tone don’t quite meld, the result can be lackluster. Despite some clever wedding gags, a couple of tepid laughs, and incredible supporting performances from Anna Chlumsky and others, the new Rebel Wilson-starrer <em><strong>Bride</strong> <strong>Hard</strong></em> could not be saved.</span></p> <h2 class="p3"><strong><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif">Synopsis</span></strong></h2> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">Sam (Wilson) and Betsy (Anna Camp) have been besties since childhood. Despite moving apart when the girls were just 11, they have managed to maintain a tight bond through the years. Naturally, when Betsy announced her engagement, she asked Sam to be her maid of honor.</span></p> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">Flash forward to the binge-fueled bachelorette party in Paris, where it is revealed to the audience that Sam has a double life as a secret operative for a clandestine organization. As she ducks in and out of the festivities to tend to her spy business, clueless Betsy and her fellow bridesmaids begin to question Sam’s loyalty.</span></p> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">Flash forward again to the weekend of the big event, held at the private island of Betsy’s soon-to-be in-laws. Despite their strained relationship, Sam shows up ready to celebrate her friend’s dream wedding. That is, until a gang of armed men interrupts the ceremony with guns blazing. While there are certainly plenty of jokes throughout the film, the actual laughs are few and far between. In most instances, setups for funny scenes fall completely flat, and pithy one-liners lack punch. A few attempts at crass humor elicit more cringes than chuckles. </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">Though the film does have its bright spots with clever wedding-themed gags and some comical sidekick antics, the action comedy falls short of big laughs.</span></p> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">The action aspect of <em><strong>Bride Hard</strong></em> isn’t quite the caliber we’re used to seeing in this kind of mid-budget flick. Still, there are some memorable sequences as Sam takes on the baddies around the estate. Creative kills with weaponized wedding decor give the movie points for originality. </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">In addition to the ho-hum humor, the logic of the characters is as thin as the plot. While it might seem ridiculous to judge the merits of a silly action comedy, some of the emotional and narrative leaps just don’t compute.</span></p> <h2 class="p3"><strong><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif">Performances</span></strong></h2> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt;color: #222222">While the overall timing and narrative leave much to be desired, the strong performances in the film mercifully buoy <em><strong>Bride Hard. </strong></em></span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">Rebel Wilson carries the project as best she can as leading lady Sam. Ever charming and affable, Wilson’s take on the duplicitous character is also sly and silly at the same time. </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">As Betsy, Anna Camp is in full blushing bride mode throughout. Camp makes cliche look adorable as she perfectly portrays her character’s somewhat vapid goodie-goodness.</span></p> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">The real scene stealer of <em><strong>Bride Hard</strong></em>, however, is Anna Chlumsky as type-A sister-in-law Virginia. Chlumsky exudes a hilarious air of superiority with her wide-eyed disdain for Sam. And Da’Vine Joy Randolph as raunchy bridesmaid Lydia brings some legit laughs.</span></p> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">Special kudos go to eternal bad boy Stephen Dorff, who further cements his status as the guy you love to hate. He brings his special brand of villainous gusto to <em><strong>Bride Hard</strong></em> in full force, providing a much-needed jolt of gravitas to the film.</span></p> <h2 class="p3"><strong><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif">Conclusion</span></strong></h2> <p class="p3"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12pt">In some comedies, nonsensical narratives are easily forgiven when matched with smart storytelling and big laughs.
